BIO
I’m not sure who coined
the phrase rock n roll ain’t pretty, but since their
inception in 2002, Sum Thin Ugly have been actively
doing their part to add truth to the rumor.
With musical influences ranging from The Beatles, Jimi
Hendrix and Alice Cooper, to Stone Temple Pilots, Guns
n’ Roses and Alice In Chains, it’s certainly evident
that these boys know how to rock. And rock they do.
Their self-titled debut showcases 12 in your face tracks
that show a musical diversity that is truly their own.
From the bluesy, hard rockin’ opening cut “S.T.U.” to
the soulful closing ballad “Freedom” Sum Thin Ugly
definitely show that they know how to lay it down.
Experience counts for a lot in music and these four long
haired rockers from the Town of Kings have proven time
and time again that they know how to play the game.
Their consistently kick ass live show, professional work
ethic and attention to detail have gained them a solid
reputation as a serious hard rock contender.
Edward Keaney / lead vocals / guitar / piano
Eddy’s down to earth approach to feel, mood and emotion
have resulted in a vocal style that lends an
unmistakable uniqueness to the Sum Thin Ugly sound. His
singing and guitar playing roots show an understanding
of melody and groove that effectively compliment his
charismatic style.
Randy Cooke / lead guitar
Randy has a natural ability to combine his sense of
melody and technical skill with the finer elements of
jazz and blues. Drawing from a wide range of music
influence, his soloing technique adds color and emotion
to the bands musical pallet.
Steve Ubdegrove / bass guitar / background vocals
Steve’s solid, straight forward bass playing provides a
ground shaking force that can only be described as
immense. His sub sonic assault and energetic stage
presence have helped propel the bands larger than life
approach.
Dean Neron / drums / background vocals
Dean’s hard hitting intensity and driving grooves
provide an unshakable foundation while staying true to
the time tested tradition of playing for the song. His
showmanship and rock solid reliability have become a
mainstay in the Sum Thin Ugly camp.
The following review is an excerpt from
PiK (Party In Kingston)
the number one online source for entertainment in the
Kingston Ontario area:
"The
second band of the night certainly didn't have that
problem. Infact they stole the show. One of
Kingston's... nay... Canada's finest rock acts, Sum
Thin Ugly put on another dynamite show. From the opening
blast of Circus Of Power's "In The Wind" on
thru to
the band's hard rockin' originals "S.T.U." (yes it
stands for Sum Thin Ugly) and "Take It" to the 'bic
waving' "Freedom", Sum Thin Ugly were on fire. Lead
guitarist Randy Cook's behind the head solo might have
been the night's finest moment. Bassist Steve Ubdegrove
and drummer Dean Neron pounded out the crushing grooves
with presicion and poise while vocalist/guitarist Eddy
Keaney belted out pitch perfect renditons of Sum Thin
Ugly's raunchy rock n roll songs. Simply put Sum Thin
Ugly should have headlined because neither of the other
bands even held a candle to them to be quite honest.
Thank god for Sum Thin Ugly saving the night or else I
would have wanted my money back ...wait I didn't pay to
get in...

Sum Thin
Ugly delivers largely commercial, old school energetic
feel good rock tunes. From the start of S.T.U. it
delivers ample hooks, catchy melodies and imaginative
harmonies – captivating the listener. With a disc full
of radio ready potential hit tracks it was difficult to
pick a favorite. With well planned orchestration, strong
musicianship and powerful lead vocals, along with tight
harmonies, Sum Thin Ugly stood out from the masses. In
our opinion the band is ready to take it to the next
level. |
